How to read a cheap hosting price table

Budget hosting plans look almost identical at first glance. The differences hide in the details of each price line, so this list is designed to be read column by column. Here is how to decode what you see and turn it into a real comparison.

The headline monthly rate

This is usually the effective monthly cost when you prepay for the longest available term. Check what term it assumes. A plan billed monthly without a prepay can cost considerably more per month than the headline suggests.

The renewal rate

When the first term ends, most plans switch to a regular price. For a fair comparison, calculate the total for three years: the first term at the introductory rate, then the remaining time at the renewal rate. Rankings can change completely once you do this.

Website and storage limits

A plan that allows one website may be fine today but force an upgrade later. Storage figures matter less than file count (inode) limits and CPU or memory allowances, which are what budget accounts actually run out of.

Included extras

Check whether backups, SSL, email accounts and a domain are included. A plan that is a little more expensive but includes daily backups may be the better deal.

A simple three-year cost worksheet

  • Step 1: note the upfront payment for the initial term you intend to buy.
  • Step 2: add renewals at the regular rate until you reach 36 months.
  • Step 3: add any add-ons you need, such as backups or domain privacy, for the full period.
  • Step 4: add domain renewals after any free first year.
  • Step 5: divide by 36 to get a true average monthly cost.

Comparing that average across plans is far more honest than comparing headline rates.

Terms that affect value

Money-back guarantee

Look at the length of the refund window and the exclusions. Domain fees and some add-ons are typically deducted from refunds.

Upgrade path

If the site grows, can you upgrade within the same account without migration or new setup fees? A smooth upgrade path protects the value of a cheap start.

Price lock options

Some hosts let you lock in a lower rate by prepaying a longer initial term. That can be worth it if you are confident in the provider, but test first.

Plans to avoid

  • Plans with no backups and no way to download your own.
  • Plans without free SSL, since paying for a basic certificate is unnecessary today.
  • Providers that do not publish renewal prices before checkout.

The cheapest web hosting plans right now

A live snapshot of our catalog: the lowest-priced shared hosting plan at each provider, with the renewal price next to it. The intro price is only half the story, so compare both columns.

How much cheap web hosting costs

Cheap web hosting starts at $1/mo. Our catalog lists 96 plans here, from budget to high-end. The final price depends on CPU cores, RAM and storage type, and on whether an intro price renews higher.

Frequently asked questions about cheap web hosting

How do I compare cheap hosting plans fairly?
Calculate the total cost over three years, including renewal pricing, needed add-ons and domain renewals, then divide by 36 months for a true monthly average.
Why does the monthly price change with the billing term?
Hosts offer lower rates for longer prepaid terms. Monthly billing is more flexible but usually costs more per month.
What limits do cheap hosting plans usually hit first?
CPU, memory, process and file count limits are typically reached before disk space, especially on dynamic sites.
Should I prepay several years to lock in a low price?
Only after testing the host during the money-back period. A long prepay saves money if you stay, but locks you in if the service disappoints.
