IONOS at a glance

IONOS is the US arm of one of Europe’s largest hosting groups. It traces its roots to 1&1, founded in Germany in 1988, which opened a US business in Pennsylvania in 2003 and built a large data center in Lenexa, Kansas. In 2018 the hosting and server lines merged with the ProfitBricks cloud platform to create the IONOS brand, and the 1&1 IONOS name was retired in January 2020. The group listed as IONOS Group SE in 2023 and claims 31 operated data centers and over 6.2 million customer contracts.

The US catalog is broad: shared web hosting, a separate WordPress line, Linux and Windows VPS, AMD and Intel dedicated servers, storage and GPU machines, plus a full cloud platform. That range is unusual for a provider whose entry plans start at a dollar a month.

Who it is for

IONOS fits small and mid-sized businesses that want one supplier for a domain, mailbox, SSL and hosting, and that are comfortable signing a one-year contract in exchange for a low first-year price. It also suits people who want European hosting with American billing and support, since the same account can place a site in Kansas or in Frankfurt. It suits less well anyone needing month-to-month flexibility or hourly billing.

Pricing, promo length and renewals

Every headline price is an introductory rate tied to a contract term, and IONOS is unusually clear about both. The four web hosting tiers are Essential, Starter, Plus and Ultimate. Essential is $4 a month for the first twelve months on a one-year term and then $8; Starter runs $6 then $10; Plus, the bestseller, is $1 for the first year and then $14; Ultimate is $10 then $18. The WordPress line follows the same twelve-month pattern: Start $5 then $8, Grow $1 then $12, Boost $12 then $17.

The VPS line works differently and is the sharpest trap in the range. The promotional window is only three months, while the contract still runs twelve. VPS M+ is $4 a month for three months against a regular rate of $11; L+ is $6 against $21; XL+ is $11 against $44; XXL+ is $18 against $68. The XL+ that looks like an eleven-dollar server costs four times that from month four onward. Dedicated servers are more honest: a twelve-month term shaves about 17 percent off, so the AR6-32 SSD is $93 rather than $103, but every configuration also carries a one-time setup fee equal to one month at the regular price.

What comes bundled

Domain bundling is genuine across the hosting lines. Web hosting and WordPress plans include one free domain for the first year when the term is twelve months or longer, from a list covering .us, .ca, .com, .net, .org, .info, .me, .biz and .online; after that year it renews at standard rates. A DV wildcard SSL certificate is included on all web tiers, with unlimited wildcard certificates on Ultimate, and professional email ships with the plan, from one mailbox on Essential to five on Ultimate. VPS plans include a wildcard certificate, two mailboxes, one IPv4 address and an IPv6 /80 block; extra addresses are $5 a month and a Plesk license is $6 a month.

Data centers and the European angle

This is where IONOS separates itself from the American budget hosts. The server pages list data center locations in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and Spain for VPS, with France added for dedicated servers. The cloud data center page names Lenexa, Newark and Las Vegas on the American side, and Frankfurt, Berlin, Paris, London, Worcester and Logrono in Europe. The group is headquartered in Germany, the facilities are ISO 27001 certified, and the marketing leans on European privacy standards and geo-redundancy. For a US buyer with European customers, picking a European region inside the same panel is a real advantage.

Performance and reliability

Web hosting is container-based Linux on NVMe storage with a CDN on the higher tiers and a published 99.99 percent uptime guarantee. Storage runs from 100 GB on Essential to 500 GB on Ultimate, and traffic and the number of websites are unmetered on every tier; what separates the plans is CPU priority, scaling from basic to ten times. The VPS platform runs on Dell enterprise hardware with recent AMD and Intel CPUs and Samsung NVMe drives, quotes 99.99 percent or better availability, and includes unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps link with no setup fee. Dedicated servers use ECC memory and RAID and ship with a 1 Gbps port and unlimited outbound traffic; the dedicated page claims better than 99.995 percent availability across more than 38,000 machines.

Verdict

IONOS is a solid, well-equipped host with a genuinely useful European footprint and a support model most budget competitors do not offer. The catch is the contract structure. Work out the renewal price before you buy, treat the VPS three-month promo as marketing, and budget for the setup fee on dedicated hardware. Judged on regular prices rather than the teaser, it is fairly priced and unusually flexible about where your data sits.
