Namecheap at a glance

Namecheap opened in 2000 as a domain registrar and is still best known for that, with more than 24 million domains under management. Hosting came later. Today it sells cPanel shared hosting under the Stellar name, managed WordPress hosting through EasyWP, reseller hosting, self-managed VPS plans and bare-metal dedicated servers. The head office is in Phoenix, Arizona, which is also where the main hosting data center sits.

Who Namecheap is for

• People who already register domains here and want hosting on the same invoice.
• Budget-conscious owners who want cPanel and Softaculous, not a proprietary panel.
• Small agencies and resellers, since reseller plans run on the same shared platform.
• Buyers outside North America, because shared hosting can sit in Amsterdam, the UK or Singapore.

It fits less well if you need a VPS or dedicated server outside the US, Windows Server, or phone support.

Pricing and renewals

Shared hosting is quoted on a yearly term. Stellar is $2.28/mo and renews at $5.88/mo, Stellar Plus is $2.98/mo renewing at $7.88/mo, and Stellar Business is $4.98/mo renewing at $11.88/mo. The discount applies only to annual and biennial purchases and never to renewals, which Namecheap states plainly in its own disclaimer. The step up at renewal is roughly two to two and a half times the intro rate, gentler than the three- and four-fold jumps common at this price. A 30-day free trial of shared hosting was running at the time of writing.

VPS plans are also billed yearly. Spark (1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, 20 GB SSD, 1,000 GB transfer) is $3.88/mo for the first year and renews at $58.56/year, or $4.88/mo. Pulsar doubles CPU and RAM at $6.88/mo, Quasar adds 4 vCPU and 6 GB at $12.88/mo, Magnetar reaches 8 vCPU and 12 GB at $24.88/mo, and Hypernova tops the range at $46.88/mo for 12 vCPU, 24 GB RAM and 500 GB. Dedicated servers start at $37.33/mo in the first year for a six-core Xeon E-2236 with 32 GB of RAM, but renew at $895.88/year, so year two costs roughly double year one. That gap is the most important thing to check before ordering.

Domains, SSL and what is actually bundled

Because Namecheap is a registrar first, buyers often assume a free domain comes with every hosting plan. It does not. The plan cards and the full comparison table list no free domain on any Stellar tier. The only domain wording is in the disclaimers: non-premium domains are free for the first year, only one domain is allowed per hosting plan, and domain and hosting bundle offers cannot be combined with other promo codes. An FAQ line adds that selected plans on the EU data center include a free .eu domain for the first year. Free SSL is clearer: every shared plan includes 50 free Standard SSL certificates for one year, installed automatically. Domain privacy is free for life on every domain registered with or transferred to Namecheap.

Features

Shared plans run cPanel on Apache or LiteSpeed with CloudLinux isolation, Imunify360 security and Softaculous. Stellar allows 3 websites, 20 GB of SSD storage and 30 mailboxes; Plus and Business move to unlimited sites and mailboxes, with Business using 50 GB of Cloud Storage. Both add AutoBackup for daily, weekly and monthly restore points, while Stellar gets only twice-weekly internal backups that are not guaranteed. VPS plans give full root access, a SolusVM panel and a choice of AlmaLinux 9, Ubuntu or Debian. cPanel and Webuzo are paid add-ons, and managed support tiers cost $10 or $25 per month above the free user-responsible default.

Data centers and the EU option

Namecheap’s knowledge base lists four locations. The PhoenixNAP facility in Phoenix, Arizona carries shared and reseller hosting, Private Email, VPS and dedicated servers. Shared hosting alone can also sit in the European data center in Amsterdam, in Datum’s UK data center in Farnborough, or in Singapore. The dedicated server pages call the Arizona site the RadiusDC data center, so the US naming is not consistent. The practical point is that the European and UK footprint is real but shared-only: there is no EU VPS and no EU dedicated server. The Netherlands, UK and Singapore sites run on 100% renewable power.

Performance, support and money-back

Namecheap publishes a 100% uptime guarantee for shared hosting, 99.9% for VPS and 99.99% for dedicated servers. VPS storage is listed as SSD in RAID 10 in the comparison table even though the marketing copy calls it NVMe SSD, so treat the NVMe claim with caution on lower tiers. Dedicated hardware leans on older Xeon E3 and E-2200 parts at entry level, with Dual Xeon Silver, Xeon Gold and one Dual AMD EPYC build higher up, all on 1,000 Mbps ports. Support runs 24/7 via live chat and tickets, with no phone line. All plans carry a 30-day money-back guarantee, although the shared refund applies only to first-time customers who did not start on the trial. Payment options are Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, PayPal and Bitcoin.

Verdict

Namecheap is a sensible, low-drama choice for a first website, especially if the domain is already here. The cPanel stack, four shared-hosting regions and a modest renewal multiplier are the strong points. Against that: a single US region for VPS and dedicated servers, dated entry-level dedicated hardware, no phone support, and a free domain that is far less automatic than the brand’s registrar reputation suggests.
