What DigitalOcean is

DigitalOcean is a US cloud provider that was founded in 2012 around a single product: the Droplet, a Linux virtual machine you can create from the control panel, the API or the doctl CLI in about a minute. It is not a traditional web host: no cPanel accounts, no twelve-month contracts and no first-term discounts that double on renewal. You rent compute, you are billed for the seconds it exists, and the charge stops when you destroy the server. The same account now also carries managed Kubernetes, managed databases, object storage, a PaaS called App Platform and GPU instances for AI workloads, but Droplets remain the core of the catalog.

Who it is for

This is a developer and agency cloud for people comfortable with SSH, a firewall and a package manager: SaaS backends, staging environments, Docker hosts, microservices, small databases, CI runners and bursty background jobs. If you want a website builder, email hosting or someone to keep WordPress patched for you, a Droplet is the wrong shape of product – DigitalOcean itself sells that kind of managed hosting through Cloudways, which it acquired in 2022.

Pricing and billing model

Shared-CPU Basic Droplets start at $4/mo ($0.00595/hr) for 1 vCPU, 512 MiB of RAM, a 10 GiB SSD and 500 GiB of outbound transfer. The tier most people actually start on is $6/mo for 1 GiB of RAM, 25 GiB of SSD and 1,000 GiB of transfer. Premium Intel and Premium AMD variants of the same shapes cost $7/mo and add NVMe storage plus a guarantee of recent-generation processors. Dedicated-CPU lines begin at $42/mo for CPU-Optimized (2 vCPU / 4 GiB), $63/mo for General Purpose (2 vCPU / 8 GiB), $84/mo for Memory-Optimized and $131/mo for Storage-Optimized, and all of them scale to 48-60 vCPU machines costing thousands per month.

Since January 2026 bundled plans are billed per second with a minimum charge of 60 seconds or $0.01, and usage is capped at 672 hours (28 days) per month, so the monthly figure is a real ceiling rather than an estimate. Two caveats are worth knowing: a powered-off Droplet still bills, because the resources stay reserved, and the newer “v5” configurations available in Atlanta, Richmond, Kansas City and Memphis price vCPU, memory and boot disk separately and have no monthly cap at all. There is no promotional rate and no renewal markup anywhere in the catalog, and no money-back guarantee either – new accounts get a $5 signup credit that expires after 90 days.

Bandwidth and overage

Every plan includes an outbound transfer allowance, from 500 GiB on the $4 plan to 10,000 GiB on the largest ones. Allowances pool across all Droplets on the team, inbound traffic is free, and traffic that stays on the VPC network does not count. Overage is flat at $0.01 per GiB – roughly $10 per 1,000 GiB, or $10.24 per TiB – and unused allowance does not roll over.

Backups and snapshots

Nothing is backed up unless you pay for it. Plan-based backups add 20% of the Droplet price per month for weekly copies or 30% for daily copies; usage-based backups instead charge $0.04 per GiB/mo weekly, down to $0.01 per GiB/mo if you want a copy every four hours. Manual snapshots cost $0.06 per GiB per month. On a $6 Droplet that is $1.20-$1.80 a month, which is reasonable, but it is a line item you switch on yourself.

Support and management

Droplets are unmanaged. You get the OS, an IP address and a console, and everything above the kernel is yours. Marketplace 1-Click images cover WordPress, LAMP, Docker and hundreds of other stacks, but no control panel is bundled – cPanel or Plesk you install and license yourself. Free 24/7 ticket and email support is included with a target response under 24 hours; live chat and faster targets are paid tiers at $24, $99 and $999 per month. Cloud firewalls, monitoring and alerts are free. If you would rather not run the server layer at all, App Platform starts at $5/mo per container (with a free tier for up to three static sites), managed Kubernetes includes the control plane at no cost, and managed databases are billed like Droplets.

Network, regions and hardware

There are 16 datacenters across 13 regions: New York, San Francisco, Atlanta, Richmond, Kansas City, Memphis, Toronto, Amsterdam, London, Frankfurt, Bangalore, Singapore and Sydney. Basic Droplets get 2 Gbps of network throughput; Premium dedicated-CPU plans go up to 10 Gbps. Images are Linux only – Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux, Rocky, CentOS Stream and Fedora – so Windows workloads are out. GPU Droplets are sold by the hour rather than the month, from $0.76/hr for an NVIDIA RTX 4000 to $4.47/hr for an H200, with eight-GPU nodes at up to $35.76/hr.

Verdict

DigitalOcean is one of the easiest clouds to budget for: public per-plan prices, per-second billing with a monthly cap, a flat $0.01/GiB bandwidth overage and a 99.99% per-Droplet SLA that pays a 100% service credit if it is missed. The trade-offs are the usual cloud ones: you administer the server, backups and snapshots are extra, faster support costs money, and the cheapest tiers are shared-CPU machines that can slow under noisy neighbors. For developers who want predictable infrastructure without a sales call, it remains a strong default; for anyone who needs a managed website, it is not the right product.
