GreenGeeks at a glance
GreenGeeks has been selling web hosting since 2008. It was founded by Trey Gardner, still the CEO, and is run by GreenGeeks LLC out of Wilmington, Delaware. The line-up covers shared hosting, hosting tuned for WordPress and WooCommerce, reseller hosting, managed and self-managed VPS plans and dedicated servers, all built around cPanel. The company says more than 55,000 customers and over 600,000 websites run on its platform. What sets the brand apart is not the hardware but the environmental accounting behind it.
Who GreenGeeks is for
- Small businesses, bloggers and nonprofits that want straightforward cPanel hosting and care about their site’s carbon footprint.
- WordPress and WooCommerce owners who want free migration, daily backups, a free first-year domain and LiteSpeed caching without configuring anything.
- Freelancers and agencies reselling hosting under their own brand with cPanel/WHM, WHMCS billing and private nameservers.
It suits developers less well: there are no cheap unmanaged boxes with hourly billing, no Windows Server, and only four regions to deploy in.
Pricing and renewals
Every shared, WordPress, WooCommerce and reseller price GreenGeeks advertises is a promotional rate that requires a 12-month prepayment, with the renewal printed underneath it. Shared Lite is $2.95/mo and renews at $13.95/mo, Pro is $4.95/mo renewing at $18.95/mo, and Premium is $8.95/mo renewing at $30.95/mo. Reseller plans follow the same pattern: RH-25 at $19.95/mo renews at $34.95/mo, RH-50 at $24.95/mo renews at $49.95/mo and RH-80 at $34.95/mo renews at $69.95/mo. Budget for roughly three to four times the headline price from year two on shared plans, and about double on reseller.
Managed VPS is not discounted: $69.95/mo for 4 vCPU, 4 GB RAM and 75 GB SSD, $129.95/mo for 6 vCPU and 8 GB, and $179.95/mo for 6 vCPU and 16 GB. Those include a cPanel Solo license, a dedicated IP and managed support, which explains the gap against unmanaged rivals. A separate self-managed range on the pricing page runs from $9.99/mo for 2 vCPU and 4 GB (renewing at $19.99/mo) to $59.99/mo for 16 vCPU and 32 GB (renewing at $109.99/mo), sold through sales rather than instant checkout. Dedicated servers start at $169/mo, also through sales.
The renewable energy claim
The central marketing claim is verifiable on GreenGeeks’ own Going Green page, and the wording is specific. The company works with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation, a Green-e partner in Portland, Oregon, which calculates its annual energy consumption; GreenGeeks then has BEF “purchase RECs 3 times as much than we have consumed, and we put that energy back into the grid.” The VPS page phrases it as buying “three times the energy we consume from verified wind energy credits.” GreenGeeks has been listed as a US Environmental Protection Agency Green Power Partner since 2009 and says it plants one tree through One Tree Planted for every hosting account provisioned. It is a credit match rather than directly wind-powered facilities, but a documented and long-running one.
Features
All three shared tiers include unmetered traffic, free Let’s Encrypt SSL with auto-renewal, a free domain for the first year, free migration, a free CDN, LiteSpeed and Redis caching, HTTP/3, current PHP versions and daily backups. Lite covers one site with 25 GB, Pro moves to unlimited sites and 50 GB, Premium to 100 GB. Developers get SSH, Git, WP-CLI, MySQL, Perl and Python plus a 150-app one-click installer. Reseller plans bundle cPanel/WHM, WHMCS, private nameservers, white-label branding and an eNom domain reseller account, from 60 GB and 25 accounts up to 160 GB and 80. Managed VPS adds dedicated vCPU cores, free cPanel migrations, 24/7 monitoring, OS patching and network-level DDoS mitigation.
Data centers
Four locations are published, each with a test IP: Chicago, Montreal, Amsterdam and Singapore, all available for every product. That is a narrow footprint next to larger budget hosts, and US customers always land in Chicago. The facilities are described as SAS 70 Type 1 certified with redundant grid feeds, generators, FM-200 fire suppression and biometric access. The minimum server specification is an Intel Xeon node with at least 128 GB of ECC memory and RAID-10 SSD arrays.
Performance and reliability
GreenGeeks commits to a 99.9% uptime guarantee in its terms of service, covering its own servers and its primary colocation connection. The stack is conventional but sensible: LiteSpeed with LSCache, Redis, container-based account isolation, SSD arrays and a free CDN. Figures such as “100% faster page load times” and a “2.8x overall performance boost” are published without methodology, so treat them as claims.
Support and money-back guarantee
Support runs 24/7 through live chat, tickets and email, and GreenGeeks publishes a US phone number, 1-877-326-7483, which is rare at this price. Every plan carries a 30-day money-back guarantee, but the terms state that it applies to the start of service only and not to renewals, so it does not protect you from the renewal jump.
Verdict
GreenGeeks is a solid cPanel host with one genuinely differentiated feature: a documented 300% renewable energy match that has run for well over a decade. If sustainability matters to your business or your clients, it is easy to justify. Go in clear-eyed about the money. The entry price is excellent for 12 months and merely average afterwards, the refund window does not cover renewals, and four locations is limiting. Buy the longest term you are comfortable with, and treat the managed VPS tier as a convenience purchase rather than a value one.
