ScalaHosting at a glance
ScalaHosting opened in 2007 selling reseller accounts and dedicated servers, moved to its own servers and network in 2010, and has built its identity since 2017 around SPanel, a control panel it wrote itself. The company files as Scala Hosting LLC from 1999 Bryan Street in Dallas, Texas, and runs its own hardware in Dallas, New York, Seattle and Sofia. The product line is narrow on purpose: shared hosting, managed cloud VPS, self-managed cloud VPS, reseller accounts and business email. There are no dedicated servers and no game hosting.
Who it is for
- Site owners who have outgrown shared hosting and want a VPS somebody else patches, monitors and fixes.
- Agencies and freelancers who host client sites and do not want to pay a per-account cPanel license.
- Developers who want a plain root box with Rocky Linux, Ubuntu, Debian or Windows Server and will run it themselves.
It is a poor fit if you need cheap monthly billing, a dedicated server, or a host whose entry VPS costs single-digit dollars.
Pricing and renewals
Shared hosting starts at $2.95/mo for Mini with 10 GB of NVMe storage and one website; Start is $5.95/mo with 50 GB and unlimited sites, and Advanced is $9.95/mo with 100 GB. Those intro rates apply on both the 12-month and 36-month terms, so there is no reason to prepay three years. Renewals land at $11.95, $14.95 and $19.95 respectively, which is a gentler step-up than most budget brands. Month-to-month customers simply pay the renewal rate from day one.
The managed cloud VPS line is the flagship and it is priced accordingly. Entry Cloud is $14.95/mo on an annual term for 2 fixed cores, 2 GB of RAM and 50 GB of NVMe, renewing at $39.95/mo. Build #1 (2 cores, 4 GB, 50 GB) is $29.95/mo on either term and renews at $54.95/mo. From there Build #2 is $44.95/mo annually (renews $96.95), Build #3 $69.95/mo (renews $170.95) and Build #4, with 12 cores and 24 GB, $94.95/mo (renews $244.95). Renewal is roughly double the annual intro rate on the larger builds, so budget for it.
Self-managed plans are cheaper and much closer to flat: Config #1 with 2 cores, 4 GB and 50 GB is $19.95/mo annually against a $24.95/mo standard rate, and the ladder runs to 16 cores, 32 GB and 240 GB at $122.95/mo (standard $183.95). Six-month and monthly billing are charged at the standard rate. Every plan can be resized from a builder that prices each extra core, gigabyte of RAM and 10 GB of disk separately.
SPanel, and what it replaces
SPanel is the reason to look at ScalaHosting. It is included at no licensing cost on every cloud VPS, with no cap on accounts or websites, and covers the usual ground: account and quota management, a DNS zone editor, mailboxes, MySQL databases, a file manager, Let’s Encrypt certificates, SSH, Git, a Node.js manager and PHP version switching. It adds a WordPress Manager with one-click staging, cloning and a security lock, plus white-label branding and private nameservers for resellers. If you prefer cPanel you can still have it, but the order form charges $32.95/mo for a five-account license and $73.95/mo for a hundred, which is exactly the fee SPanel exists to remove; on shared hosting cPanel is $1/mo. The other in-house piece is SShield, a monitoring layer that blocks attacks and quarantines infected files automatically.
Data centers
Cloud VPS orders can be placed in fifteen regions: Dallas, New York and Seattle in the USA, Sofia, Amsterdam, Helsinki, Madrid, London, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Stavanger, Warsaw and Frankfurt in Europe, plus Singapore and Sydney. The four US and Bulgarian sites are ScalaHosting’s own hardware; the rest come from integrated cloud and AWS partners, and the network page lists further AWS-only sites for the managed AWS service. Shared hosting is limited to Dallas, New York or Europe.
Performance and reliability
Servers are AMD EPYC with clocks quoted up to 4.1 GHz, NVMe storage throughout and a 10 Gbps redundant network with multiple uplinks. OpenLiteSpeed is available at no charge and a commercial LiteSpeed license can be added from the order form. Bandwidth is unmetered on every plan. The terms of service carry a tiered uptime credit schedule that starts paying out below 99.9%, so treat 99.9% as the contractual figure even though the managed cloud page advertises 99.99%.
Support and guarantee
Live chat, tickets and email run 24/7, with published averages of under 30 seconds on chat and under 15 minutes on tickets; the phone line is pre-sales only and keeps business hours. Migrations are free. The refund policy is unusually generous: a full no-questions refund inside 30 days for new customers, and a prorated refund of the unused term at any point after that. Payment is by card, PayPal or bank transfer, with no cryptocurrency option.
Verdict
ScalaHosting is not the cheap option, and it does not pretend to be. What you buy is a managed VPS with a capable control panel that costs nothing to license, real US hardware, an honest refund policy and support that answers quickly. Agencies running many client accounts save the most, because SPanel removes a cPanel bill that scales with every site added. Take the annual term rather than the three-year one on shared plans, and check the renewal rate on the bigger managed builds before you commit.
