HostPapa at a glance
HostPapa is an independent hosting company founded in 2006 by Jamie Opalchuk and headquartered in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. It is not part of Newfold Digital or any other hosting conglomerate; instead, it has grown by buying smaller brands of its own, including Lunarpages in 2019, the web hosting business of Deluxe Corporation in 2023 and, according to its own timeline, Hostwinds and Tailor Made Servers in 2026. The current lineup covers cPanel shared hosting, optimized and managed WordPress, reseller hosting, unmanaged and managed VPS, and dedicated servers, plus domains, email and website design services aimed at small businesses.
Who HostPapa is for
- Small business owners who want classic cPanel hosting with email and a free first-year domain.
- Site owners who value published resource limits instead of vague “unlimited” promises.
- Canadian businesses, or US companies with Canadian customers, that want a Toronto data center.
- Developers who want a very cheap unmanaged NVMe VPS and are comfortable running it themselves.
It is a weaker fit for buyers who want a modern proprietary dashboard, hourly cloud billing or Windows servers.
Pricing and renewals
Shared hosting prices on the US site are quoted on a 36-month term. Essentials (1 website, 25 GB NVMe) is $2.95/mo, Growth (5 websites, 100 GB) is $5.95/mo, Premium (unlimited websites, 200 GB) is $6.95/mo and Elite (unlimited websites, unmetered NVMe storage) is $9.95/mo. HostPapa publishes a separate renewal pricing page, which is worth reading before you buy: on a 3-year renewal the same plans cost $8.99, $13.99, $19.99 and $27.99 per month, and more if you renew monthly. The optimized WordPress plans use the same prices and renewal rates as the shared plans.
Managed WordPress is priced differently. MWP Core (1 site, 30 GB NVMe, 50,000 monthly visits) is $14.95/mo and MWP Standard (80 GB, 200,000 visits) is $34.95/mo on a 2-year term, and the renewal table lists the same monthly rates, so there is no renewal jump on those plans.
VPS and dedicated servers
Unmanaged VPS plans start with Lite (1 core, 1 GB RAM, 25 GB NVMe, 4 TB transfer) at $2.95/mo on a 36-month term, a rate the renewal table keeps for the same term. Start (2 cores, 2 GB) is $5.95/mo, Progress (4 cores, 4 GB, 100 GB) is $9.95/mo, Achieve (8 cores, 8 GB) is $19.95/mo, Excel (16 cores, 16 GB) is $29.95/mo and Triumph (32 cores, 32 GB) is $59.95/mo; 3-year renewals range from $9.99 to $79.99 per month. Managed VPS with cPanel/WHM and two IP addresses starts at $36.95/mo.
Dedicated servers are sold at flat monthly prices that renew at the same rate. The range starts with Spark, an older Xeon E3-1240v3 with 32 GB DDR3 and 1 TB SSD for $59.95/mo, and moves up to Drive with an AMD Ryzen 9 5950X, 128 GB RAM and 1 TB NVMe for $189.95/mo. Every dedicated plan includes 40 TB of transfer and one IPv4 address; managed versions add $50 per month.
Features
All shared plans run on CloudLinux, which isolates each account’s CPU, memory and I/O, and include Imunify360 malware protection, a CDN, staging and free SSL. HostPapa lists exact limits per plan: Essentials gets 10 entry points, 1 CPU core and 150,000 inodes, while Premium and Elite get 40 entry points, 4 cores and 450,000 inodes. Plans above Essentials add Protection Power, which covers DDoS protection and one-time malware removal help. Automated backups are free only for the first year, and the backup allowance is small (1 GB on Essentials, up to 10 GB on Elite).
The VPS line uses NVMe storage, root access, a VHI VPS panel, a firewall with automatic DDoS mitigation and a choice of CentOS, Ubuntu or Debian. Unmanaged plans do not include cPanel, migration help or backups; Acronis backup, CloudLinux and Imunify360 are paid add-ons.
Data centers
HostPapa lists five hosting data centers: Toronto, Los Angeles, Buffalo, Miami and Amsterdam. Its dedicated servers page shows additional server locations in Chicago, Dallas, Seattle and Atlanta, which gives dedicated buyers good coverage across the United States.
Support and guarantees
Support runs 24/7 through live chat, email tickets and phone, with a US toll-free number. HostPapa offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on hosting (domain fees are non-refundable) and a 99.9% uptime guarantee. In the United States it accepts major credit cards, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover, as well as PayPal.
Verdict
HostPapa is a solid independent choice for small businesses that want cPanel hosting, transparent resource limits and phone support, and its renewal pricing page is more open than most. The drawbacks are the usual 3-year prepayment for the lowest prices, renewals that are roughly three times the intro rate on shared plans, backups that stop being free after year one and older hardware on entry dedicated servers. Choose Premium if you run several sites, and compare the renewal table with competitors before committing.
