DreamHost at a glance
DreamHost has been hosting websites since 1997, which makes it one of the oldest independent hosts still standing. The company is employee-owned, with no private equity backer and no corporate parent, and it says it now hosts more than 1.5 million websites for over 400,000 customers. The product line is deliberately narrow: shared web hosting, DreamPress managed WordPress, a managed VPS tier, a self-managed KVM VPS line with root access, dedicated servers, domains and email. The whole platform is built around WordPress.
Who DreamHost is for
- WordPress site owners who want a straightforward plan with daily backups, free SSL and a free domain on annual terms.
- Freelancers and agencies running several client sites who need per-site resource limits without touching a server.
- Developers who want a cheap AMD EPYC KVM instance with full root access, Docker support and no bandwidth metering.
- Buyers who dislike prepay-only pricing, because every DreamHost plan can also be billed month to month.
It fits less well if you need Windows Server, cPanel, phone support or data centers outside the four locations listed below.
Pricing and renewals
DreamHost prints the renewal rate on every plan card, which is rarer in this market than it should be, but the discounts still depend on how long you prepay. Web Hosting Launch is $1.99/mo on a four-year term and renews at $7.99/mo; the same plan is $2.89/mo on a one-year term with a $10.99/mo renewal, and $4.99/mo for three months on monthly billing before it moves to $11.99/mo. Growth costs $3.49/mo on four years (renewing at $8.99/mo) and Scale is $7.99/mo (renewing at $19.99/mo). The full term is charged at checkout.
DreamPress starts at $14.99/mo for the first year and renews at $19.99/mo, scaling to DreamPress 20 at $77.99/mo (renewing at $107.99/mo) for 20 sites and 200 GB of NVMe storage. The self-managed VPS line runs from $5.99/mo on a two-year term for Stack 4 (2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 75 GB NVMe), with a $10.99/mo renewal; on monthly billing the same plan is $8.99/mo for three months and then $15.99/mo. Managed VPS is the sharpest gap between intro and renewal: VPS Business is $10/mo for three years and then $24.99/mo, and VPS Enterprise jumps from $40/mo to $92.99/mo. Dedicated servers are priced without promotions at all, from $165/mo billed yearly ($199/mo billed monthly) for a 6-core, 16 GB machine up to $625/mo for a 12-core box with 128 GB of RAM.
Features
Shared and managed WordPress
Web hosting plans include 25 to 100 websites, 25 GB to 100 GB of NVMe storage, unmetered bandwidth, daily automated backups, unlimited free SSL certificates, a free domain for a year on annual terms and a three-month trial of mailboxes at your own domain. DreamHost also builds a four-page starter site for new customers at no charge. DreamPress adds a professional migration, longer backup retention, on-demand and locked backups, one-click staging, NGINX and Redis caching, failover protection and unlimited mailboxes.
VPS and dedicated
The self-managed VPS line runs on AMD EPYC processors with NVMe storage, KVM virtualization, Docker support, full root access, a one-click app library and DDoS protection. Bandwidth is unmetered with no per-gigabyte overage, which is the main pitch against metered cloud providers. Managed VPS keeps the dedicated RAM and CPU but removes root access and adds proactive monitoring, resource dashboards and an automatic RAM boost during traffic spikes. Dedicated servers ship with RAID 1 enterprise SSD storage, root and SSH access, a local MySQL server and Ubuntu.
Data centers
DreamHost lists four data center regions: Ashburn in Virginia, Hillsboro in Oregon, Amsterdam in the Netherlands and Singapore. The company does not publish which products run in each region, so a non-US audience is worth confirming with support before buying. Facilities use high-efficiency cooling, power-efficient processors and clean-power programs, which is the basis for the green hosting claim.
Performance and reliability
DreamHost advertises a 100% uptime guarantee backed by service credits, and the same figure applies to the dedicated network. That is a strong headline, though credits never fully compensate for downtime and no public audit backs the number. The hardware is solid: NVMe storage across web, DreamPress and VPS, EPYC CPUs on the VPS line, caching and failover on DreamPress. Bunny CDN is an optional paid add-on on web hosting and is bundled with DreamPress.
Support and the refund window
Support is in-house and available 24/7/365 through live chat, panel tickets and email, with social channels as a fallback. There is no published phone line. The refund policy is now a 30-day money-back guarantee, confirmed both on the plan cards and in the knowledge base; the 97-day guarantee DreamHost was once famous for is gone, and the number 97 now only appears as the holding period in its affiliate program. Payment options are credit and debit cards, PayPal, and checks or money orders drawn on US banks. Cryptocurrency is not accepted.
Verdict
DreamHost is a good pick for WordPress-centric buyers who value transparent renewal pricing, unmetered bandwidth and an independent, employee-owned company. The catch is the same one the whole segment has: the headline prices come from multi-year prepayment, and managed VPS renewals more than double. Take the monthly option if you want to test the platform, then lock in a longer term once you are sure.
