What a VPS actually gives you

A virtual private server is a slice of a physical machine with its own guaranteed share of CPU, memory and storage, plus full root or administrator access. Unlike shared hosting, your neighbors cannot eat into the resources you pay for, and you can install any software stack you like. Unlike a dedicated server, you are not paying for an entire box, and you can usually resize a plan in minutes.

That flexibility is why a VPS is the default next step for sites that outgrow shared hosting, for developers who need a custom environment, and for anyone running background services such as APIs, bots, databases or game servers.

How to compare VPS plans on this page

The table above lists providers we review, with their plans normalized so you can compare like with like. When you read it, look past the headline number and check these points:

  • vCPU type and allocation. Two vCPUs on a modern AMD EPYC or recent Intel platform are not the same as two vCPUs on older hardware. Some hosts also sell shared vCPUs, while others offer dedicated cores at a higher price.
  • RAM and storage. NVMe SSD storage is now common and noticeably faster for databases. Check the disk size you actually get after the operating system is installed.
  • Bandwidth. Plans either include a monthly transfer allowance, meter overages, or advertise unmetered traffic with a fair-use policy.
  • Data center location. Pick a region close to your visitors. Latency matters more than a small spec difference.
  • Monthly price versus renewal price. Introductory discounts often apply only to the first term. Compare what you will pay in year two.

Managed or unmanaged?

An unmanaged VPS is a clean operating system and a console. You handle updates, firewalls, backups and troubleshooting yourself. It is the cheapest option and ideal if you are comfortable on the command line.

A managed VPS adds a support team that patches the server, monitors services and often includes a control panel such as cPanel or Plesk. It costs more, but it can save hours every month for a business that does not have a sysadmin. Many providers sit in between, offering a free control panel and basic monitoring while leaving application issues to you.

Reliability and safety checks before you order

  • Read the uptime SLA and what compensation it actually pays when it is missed.
  • Confirm whether backups or snapshots are included, how often they run and whether restoring them costs extra.
  • Ask whether basic DDoS protection is part of the network or an add-on.
  • Check the money-back guarantee window and whether setup fees or add-ons are refundable.

Narrow it down by need

If budget is the main constraint, start with our cheap VPS shortlist. If you need Windows Server or a specific region, use the filters at the top of the page. And if you are not sure a VPS is the right tier at all, our guide to types of web hosting explains how shared, VPS, cloud and dedicated options differ.

Frequently asked questions about VPS hosting

What is the best VPS hosting in 2026?

There is no single best VPS: the right choice depends on your workload, budget and where your users are. We track 30 providers in this section. Sort by rating, then filter by price, location, CPU and RAM to shortlist two or three providers and compare their plans side by side.

What is a VPS in simple terms?

A VPS (virtual private server) is a slice of a powerful physical server that works like a machine of its own: it has its own operating system, IP address and guaranteed CPU, RAM and storage.

For you it feels like owning a server: full root access, install any software, reboot whenever you need. Yet a VPS costs a fraction of a physical server, because you pay only for the resources your project actually uses.

How much does a VPS cost?

Entry-level VPS plans in our catalog start from $1.83/mo, usually 1 vCPU and 1 GB of RAM. Rough budget guide:

  • under $6/mo: a landing page, a small bot, a dev or test box;
  • $6 to $25/mo: WordPress or WooCommerce, one or two production apps;
  • $25/mo and up: busy sites, databases, game servers and AI inference.

Watch the renewal price and whether the plan requires a long prepay.

Managed or unmanaged VPS: which should I choose?

An unmanaged VPS is cheaper: you get root access and handle the OS, security updates and software yourself. A managed VPS costs more, but the provider patches the server, monitors it and often includes a control panel such as cPanel. If you are not comfortable with the Linux command line, go managed.

How do I choose a VPS provider?

Compare providers on the parameters that matter for your project:

  • Data center location: pick a region close to your users (US East, US West, Central) for lower latency;
  • Storage: NVMe is much faster than SATA SSD, let alone HDD;
  • CPU and RAM: leave headroom for traffic peaks;
  • Backups, snapshots and DDoS protection: important for anything in production;
  • Uptime SLA and support: 24/7 live chat or tickets with a clear response time;
  • Money-back guarantee and billing: hourly or monthly billing lowers the risk of trying a host.
VPS or shared web hosting: what is the difference?

Shared hosting splits one server between many customers: it is cheaper and fully set up, but resources and software are limited. A VPS gives you isolated, guaranteed resources and root access to install anything. Move to a VPS when your site outgrows shared limits or you need custom software.

Can I try a VPS before committing?

Yes. Many providers offer hourly billing, so you can spin up a server for a few hours, test it and delete it for a few cents. Others offer a free trial or a money-back guarantee. Use the matching filters to find them.

Which VPS locations are available in the US?

Most providers run US data centers in major hubs such as New York, Dallas, Chicago, Los Angeles, Silicon Valley, Seattle, Miami and Atlanta. For a nationwide audience a central location like Dallas or Chicago is a good compromise. If your users are in Europe or Asia, filter by Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, Singapore or Tokyo instead.
