Vultr at a glance

Vultr is a developer-focused cloud platform launched in 2014 and operated by The Constant Company. It sells self-managed cloud servers, bare metal machines, cloud GPUs, managed databases, Kubernetes and object storage, all billed by the hour with a monthly cap. There is no shared hosting, no cPanel bundle and no phone support: you get a clean control panel, a full API and root access, and you are expected to run the server yourself. For US buyers who know their way around Linux, it is one of the most flexible ways to rent compute close to their users.

Pricing and renewals

Vultr does not use introductory discounts, so there is no renewal shock. The price you see is the price you keep. Regular Cloud Compute starts at $5/mo for 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, 25 GB SSD and 1 TB of transfer, and a 2 vCPU / 4 GB instance costs $20/mo. An IPv6-only 0.5 GB instance is listed at $2.50/mo but is only deployable in a couple of US locations. High Frequency (Intel, NVMe) and High Performance (AMD EPYC or Intel, NVMe) plans start at $6/mo. Every instance is billed hourly up to its monthly price, which makes short tests nearly free.

Extras are where the bill grows. Automatic backups add 20% to an instance price, snapshots cost $0.05 per GB per month, DDoS Protection is an extra $10/mo per instance, and bandwidth over the pooled quota is charged at $0.01 per GB. Budget for those items before comparing Vultr with an all-inclusive VPS.

Bare metal

Single-tenant bare metal starts at $120/mo for an Intel Xeon E3-1270 with 32 GB RAM and two 240 GB SSDs. AMD EPYC 4245P machines with NVMe start at $295/mo, and 24-core EPYC servers with 256 to 384 GB RAM sit in the $725 to $825 range. Bare metal is also billed hourly, which is unusual in the dedicated server market.

Performance and hardware

The Regular Performance line runs on previous-generation Intel CPUs with standard SSDs, so it is best for light sites, bots, internal tools, dev boxes and small databases. For production workloads, the High Performance line pairs newer AMD EPYC or Intel Xeon CPUs with NVMe storage and higher transfer allowances at similar prices, so it is usually the better buy. Optimized Cloud Compute adds dedicated vCPUs for CPU-bound jobs, and the VX1 line targets cost-efficient scaling with up to 50 Gbps networking. All virtual machines use KVM, and you can run Linux distributions, Windows Server (licensed at extra cost) or FreeBSD, or upload your own ISO.

Data centers

Vultr lists 33 regions. In the US you can deploy in New Jersey, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, Miami, Seattle, Los Angeles and Silicon Valley (Honolulu is also listed as a region), plus Toronto and Mexico City nearby. Outside North America the map covers London, Manchester, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris, Madrid, Milan, Warsaw, Stockholm, Tel Aviv, Johannesburg, Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Singapore, Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Sydney, Melbourne, Sao Paulo and Santiago. Not every plan is sold in every region, so check availability for bare metal and the cheapest instances.

Support and reliability

Support is ticket-based and available around the clock, backed by extensive documentation. There is no live chat or phone line for standard accounts, which matters if you are new to servers. Vultr publishes a 100% uptime SLA based on network and host node availability, with service credits rather than cash refunds. Treat any SLA as compensation terms, not a guarantee against outages, and keep your own backups.

Money-back and payment

There is no money-back guarantee, but hourly billing makes that less important: destroy an instance and charges stop. Accounts are prepaid or charged to a card, and Vultr also accepts PayPal and cryptocurrency.

Verdict

Vultr is a strong pick for technical US buyers who want transparent, non-promotional pricing, hourly billing and a wide choice of regions from one dashboard. Choose the High Performance line over Regular for real workloads, and factor in backups and DDoS protection. Beginners who need managed hosting, cPanel or phone support should look elsewhere.
