What Kamatera is

Kamatera is an infrastructure-as-a-service cloud rather than a web host. Instead of picking a box off a shelf, you choose the CPU class, the vCPU count, the RAM and the NVMe volume separately, then pick one of 21 data centers. The company trades as Kamatera, Inc.; its service level agreement is governed by Israeli law with jurisdiction in Tel Aviv-Jaffa, and its sales line is a New York number. The about page dates the brand to 1996, when the founder of parent group OMC (formed in 1995) launched its first hosting brand.

Who it is for

• Developers and sysadmins who want an exact spec instead of a fixed plan ladder.
• Agencies and MSPs needing servers on several continents under one console, with reseller and white-label programs available.
• Windows and remote-desktop workloads: Windows Server and Desktop images, RDS user licences, Microsoft SQL Server and Office are sold as add-ons.
• Anyone who wants a cloud server but not the administration: Kamatera sells a managed-service add-on, which most developer clouds do not.

Pricing and billing

Three preset cards are advertised: Basic at $4/mo (1 vCPU Type A, 1 GB RAM, 20 GB NVMe), Standard at $25/mo (2 vCPU Type B, 2 GB RAM, 20 GB) and Pro at $39/mo (2 vCPU Type B, 4 GB RAM, 20 GB). Everything else is built in the on-site calculator, where each component carries its own published price: 20 GB of NVMe is $6/mo and 100 GB is $14/mo, RAM runs from $6/mo for 4 GB up to $378/mo for 128 GB, and CPU is priced per class.

The classes are the part worth understanding. Type A (availability) shares a thread with no guarantee and starts at $4/mo. Type B (general purpose) gives a reserved thread and starts at $9/mo or $0.0123/hr. Type T (burstable) is the same reserved thread but charges an extra $0.041 per hour per vCPU if your average CPU use stays above 10%; Kamatera’s own worked example puts an 8 vCPU / 8 GB / 50 GB burstable server at $68 for 730 hours powered on and $7.50 when powered off. Type D (dedicated) assigns a whole physical core, two threads, and starts at $19/mo or $0.026/hr.

There is no promotional first-term price and no renewal markup: a monthly server is prepaid at the configuration you chose, upgrades are prorated, and you can scale up or down at any time. Hourly servers are billed by the minute and stop billing when terminated, and a powered-off hourly server costs only a fraction of the powered-on rate. Payment is by credit or debit card, or by prepaid deposit funded by card or PayPal. There is no money-back window because there is no long commitment; instead there is a 30-day free trial worth up to $100 of services on one server, with 1 TB of block storage and 1 TB of traffic, and it does require a valid credit card.

Bandwidth and overage

Monthly servers include 5 TB (5,000 GB) of traffic per server, counting both directions, with the exception of Asian data centers, where the default allowance is 1 TB per month. Going over costs $0.01 per GB, which works out to $10 per extra TB – one of the cheaper overage rates among the big clouds. There is also an unmetered option capped at 50 Mbit/sec; Kamatera’s FAQ explains that the 5,000 GB package is still the reference point and that unusually receive-heavy traffic (incoming above roughly a third of the total) can be billed in full. Hourly servers have no included allowance at all: traffic on them is billed at the same $0.01 per GB from the start.

Support and management

Servers are unmanaged by default – you get root or administrator access and the console. Support itself is genuinely staffed around the clock by phone, chat and email, which is unusual at this price level; a dedicated cloud administrator is offered to large accounts. If you want someone else to look after the operating system, the managed-service checkbox in the calculator adds $50/mo and covers 24/7 monitoring and system-level technical support, though Kamatera states its team acts on request rather than making proactive changes. cPanel licences run from $35/mo (Admin, 5 accounts) to $72/mo (Premier, 100 accounts), and Plesk from $22/mo (Web Admin, 10 domains) to $69/mo (Web Host, unlimited).

Backups, snapshots and extras

Daily backups are a paid add-on: Kamatera keeps up to 14 daily restore points and prices the service from the server’s own specification rather than a flat figure. Extra block storage is $0.05 per GB per month. The first IP address is included; IPv6 costs $1 per address per month, up to four per server, and has to be requested from support rather than ticked at checkout. Premium firewall images, ESET antivirus and Microsoft licences are billed separately.

Verdict

Kamatera suits buyers for whom the shape of the server matters more than the badge on the plan: four CPU classes, independent RAM and disk sizing up to 104 vCPU, per-minute billing and 21 regions. The trade-offs are small print – only three prices are advertised outright, backup pricing is quote-based, IPv6 is a paid ticket, and the binding SLA commits to 99.9% while marketing advertises 99.95%. For teams comfortable with a calculator, the flexibility and the managed option make it a credible alternative to the better-known developer clouds.
