Liquid Web at a glance

Liquid Web sells managed infrastructure, not cheap web space. The line runs from a $5 self-managed VPS to built-to-order dedicated servers, all on its own hardware in its own data centers, with support by chat, ticket, email and phone around the clock. The site footer now reads “Liquid Web, LLC by Nexcess Corp.”, and the Nexcess platform powers the managed WordPress plans, so the two brands share infrastructure and one SLA document.

Management tiers: what “fully managed” really means

The support page publishes a three-column matrix worth reading first, because the gap between tiers is where the money goes. Self-managed gets 24/7/365 support availability, managed network and hardware support and hardware usage monitoring – and nothing above the hypervisor. Core managed adds outage monitoring with reactive remediation, core OS updates and patches and server-side troubleshooting. Fully managed adds OS and control panel updates and security patches, control panel support (Liquid Web-provided panels only), software firewall configuration, PHP version installs and upgrades, and virus scanning and spam protection. Two footnotes matter: remediation may need the customer’s authorization first, and features such as PHP versions and spam filtering are handled in the control panel.

Control panels are cPanel, Plesk and InterWorx, the last allowing unlimited sites on dedicated plans, while DirectAdmin, Webmin and CentOS Web Panel run on almost all servers but sit outside fully managed cover. A dedicated migrations team moves site content, email, databases and panel accounts, free for most customers.

Hardware, network and locations

VPS plans are KVM instances on SSD with a 10 Gbps network, dedicated IP, root access and unmetered inbound traffic – only outbound is counted, at 1 to 8 TB per tier. Dedicated servers are Intel Xeon builds – E-2134 and E-2276G on the entry tiers, Xeon Gold 6226R single and dual above them, all with 10 TB of bandwidth – while the bare metal line uses Xeon Gold 6526Y with NVMe RAID-1. Cloud dedicated, also called Cloud Metal, puts a whole machine’s CPU and RAM behind a hypervisor so it can be resized without swapping hardware.

Nine facilities are listed as Liquid Web’s own: Lansing, Southfield, Phoenix, San Jose and Ashburn in the US, Amsterdam, London and West Sussex in Europe, and Sydney in Australia. Eleven more on the same page belong to sibling brand Servers.com. The company describes its buildings as Tier-4, with N+1 generators and UPS systems, level 3 technicians on site around the clock and direct links to Cogent, Level3, Verizon and Comcast.

Managed WordPress

WordPress plans are sold by monthly visits, not CPU or RAM, and no vCPU or memory figures are published. Essentials, Pro and Elite each come in 50k, 150k and 400k visitor tiers with 15, 40 or 100 GB of storage and 2 to 5 TB of bandwidth. Every tier includes DDoS protection, a web application firewall, Object Cache Pro, Cloudflare Enterprise, free SSLs and daily backups kept for 7, 14 or 30 days. Pro and Elite add Patchstack virtual patching and a human-assisted migration; Essentials only gets the self-service migration tool.

Support and the uptime SLA

Support, billing and sales run 24 hours a day, every day, by chat, support case, email and phone, with numbers for the Americas, Australia and the United Kingdom. The SLA is where the promises get specific. Network uptime is guaranteed at 100%, meaning all major routing devices stay reachable from the global internet; if that is missed, dedicated hosting customers can claim ten times the recorded downtime as credit, capped at the monthly recurring charge and filed within five business days. Failed dedicated hardware is to be replaced within 30 minutes of diagnosis in most cases, again backed by a ten-times credit, and the Nexcess section promises 100% uninterrupted transit and electricity with a 5% credit per additional 15 minutes of unavailability. On response times the SLA is blunt: the team strives for chat replies in under a minute and tickets within an hour, but those targets are not part of the SLA and not guaranteed. Marketing pages are less consistent, quoting 99.9%, 99.99% and even 99.9999%.

Backups, pricing and refunds

Server backups are an Acronis Cyber Backups add-on holding encrypted incremental and full copies off-server; the per-GB price is not published. Other extras include hardened configurations, cybersecurity monitoring, compliance scanning, a firewall add-on and Cloudflare CDN. Pricing is month-to-month, and the standing promotion is 50% off the first two months for new accounts only, never for upgrades – after that the list price applies, so a $36 managed VPS becomes $72. Cloud VPS can also be billed hourly, from $0.007 per hour on the 1 GB instance, while WordPress plans carry no intro discount and save 10% on annual billing.

The refund position is strict: the terms of service state that all services are non-cancellable and all fees non-refundable, with 30 days’ written notice to terminate and early termination charges on term commitments. No money-back guarantee appears on the pages published today.

Who it suits

Liquid Web fits agencies, SaaS operators and store owners who want a US-staffed team to own the operating system layer and a contractual credit when the network fails; the self-managed line is a cheap way to rent good hardware if the team can run it. Anyone shopping on price, wanting a trial or refund window, or needing IPv6, crypto payments or a published DDoS mitigation figure should look elsewhere.

Liquid Web pros and cons

👍 Pros

  • Published three-tier support matrix (self-managed, core managed, fully managed) so it is clear what is covered
  • 100% network uptime SLA with a 10x downtime credit and a 30-minute hardware replacement target
  • 24/7/365 support by chat, ticket, email and phone from US facilities
  • Own data centers in five US cities plus Amsterdam, London, West Sussex and Sydney
  • 10 Gbps network, unmetered inbound traffic and hourly billing on cloud VPS

👎 Cons

  • No money-back guarantee: the terms of service make all fees non-refundable and services non-cancellable
  • Managed pricing is high and the 50%-off promo covers only the first two months for new accounts, so a 4 GB managed VPS goes from $36 to $72/mo
  • Marketing pages quote 99.9%, 99.99% and 99.9999% uptime while the SLA says 100% network uptime - the figures do not line up
