The four main types of hosting

All hosting does the same basic job: it keeps your website or application on a server that is connected to the internet. The differences come down to how much of the server you get, how much control you have, who does the maintenance and how you pay. Here is how the options compare.

Shared hosting

Many customers share one server, each with their own account and resource limits. The provider manages everything at the server level; you manage your site through a control panel such as cPanel. It is the cheapest and easiest option, ideal for blogs, portfolios and small business sites. The trade-offs are limited resources, no root access and the possibility that other accounts affect performance.

VPS hosting

A virtual private server divides a physical machine into isolated virtual machines, each with guaranteed CPU, RAM and storage and its own operating system. You get root access and can install anything. VPS plans can be unmanaged, where you run the server yourself, or managed, where the provider handles updates and security. It is the usual next step for growing sites, developers and applications.

Cloud hosting

Cloud hosting runs virtual servers on large pools of hardware, often with hourly billing, APIs, and the ability to add or remove resources quickly. It excels for workloads that change size, for teams that automate infrastructure, and for architectures that spread across several servers. Costs can be less predictable if usage is not monitored.

Dedicated hosting

You rent an entire physical server. Nothing is shared, performance is consistent and you can choose specific hardware. It suits high-traffic sites, large databases, storage-heavy projects and workloads that need complete isolation. It costs more, often involves setup fees or contracts, and hardware failures need planning around.

Comparing the options at a glance

  • Ease of use: shared is easiest; managed VPS and managed dedicated come next; unmanaged VPS, cloud and dedicated require administration skills.
  • Control: shared offers the least; VPS, cloud and dedicated give full root access.
  • Performance consistency: dedicated is the most predictable, followed by VPS and cloud with dedicated CPU, then shared.
  • Scalability: cloud scales fastest; VPS resizes easily; dedicated upgrades need hardware changes; shared is limited to plan tiers.
  • Cost: shared is lowest, then VPS, with cloud and dedicated varying widely by resources.

Specialized hosting labels

You will also see WordPress hosting, eCommerce hosting, reseller hosting and game server hosting. These are usually one of the four core types, configured and supported for a specific use. Understanding the underlying type helps you see what you are really buying.

How to choose

  • Start with shared hosting if you are launching a typical website and do not need custom software.
  • Choose a VPS when you need root access, guaranteed resources or to run background services.
  • Choose cloud when your workload varies a lot or you want to automate infrastructure.
  • Choose dedicated when you need maximum consistent performance, big storage or strict isolation.

Whichever type you pick, check the uptime SLA, backups, data center location, DDoS protection, the money-back guarantee, and compare the monthly price and the renewal price. Ready to compare providers? Browse shared web hosting, VPS hosting or dedicated hosting reviews.

How much web hosting costs

Web hosting starts at $1/mo. Our catalog lists 445 plans here, from budget to high-end. The final price depends on CPU cores, RAM and storage type, and on whether an intro price renews higher.

Frequently asked questions about web hosting

What is the difference between shared hosting and a VPS?
Shared hosting splits one server among many accounts with limited control. A VPS gives you an isolated virtual machine with guaranteed resources and root access.
Is cloud hosting the same as a VPS?
They overlap. Cloud hosting usually adds flexible hourly billing, fast scaling and automation across large hardware pools, while a classic VPS has fixed plans.
When do I need a dedicated server?
When your workload needs consistent full-machine performance, large storage, specific hardware or complete isolation that a VPS cannot provide.
Which type of hosting is best for beginners?
Shared hosting, because the provider manages the server and you work through an easy control panel.
Is WordPress hosting a separate type of hosting?
Not really. It is usually shared, VPS or cloud hosting configured and supported specifically for WordPress.
