OVHcloud at a glance

OVHcloud is a European cloud provider that has been building and running its own data centers since 1999. Unlike most US hosts, it does not rent capacity from someone else: it designs its own servers, assembles them in its own factories, cools them with its own water-cooling system, and connects them over its own backbone. In the United States the business trades as OVH US LLC and operates two of its own sites, Vint Hill in Virginia and Hillsboro in Oregon, plus a growing set of smaller Local Zones in cities such as New York, Atlanta, Dallas, Miami, Denver, Los Angeles and Seattle.

The catalog is wide. Monthly VPS instances sit at the entry level, hourly Public Cloud instances (including NVIDIA L4 and L40S GPU flavors) sit in the middle, and single-tenant bare metal servers sit at the top. Everything is unmanaged by default: you get root, a control panel and a full public API, and you run the machine yourself.

Who it suits

• Teams that want a US, Canadian or EU location from the same provider and the same invoice.
• Projects that push a lot of traffic and do not want to be billed per terabyte.
• Anyone who needs real bare metal with AMD EPYC or Intel Xeon-E silicon rather than a slice of a shared host.
• Buyers who care about where their data physically sits, since OVHcloud owns the buildings as well as the hardware.

Pricing and billing

The VPS line is billed monthly, not hourly. The entry configuration in the US order catalog is a single vCore with 2 GB of RAM and 40 GB of NVMe storage at $7.00 per month with no commitment, and there are no installation fees on VPS. Committing to 12 or 24 months lowers the effective monthly rate, so the same instance drops to about $5.95 per month on a 24-month term. Mid-range configurations run from $12.50 for two vCores and 4 GB to $20.00 for four vCores and 8 GB, and an eight-vCore, 16 GB instance is $49.50.

Public Cloud works the other way round and bills by the hour with a monthly cap. A Discovery d2-2 instance with one vCore, 2 GB and 25 GB of storage is $0.0129 per hour or $7.08 per month, and a general purpose b2-7 with two vCores and 7 GB is $0.0879 per hour or $31.19 per month. GPU instances start at $1 per hour for an L4 with 22 vCores and 90 GB of RAM.

Bare metal is where the cost model differs from a pure cloud: the Advance range starts at $98 per month for an Intel Xeon-E 2386G with 32 GB and two 512 GB NVMe drives, and an AMD EPYC 4244P (6 cores, 12 threads) with 32 GB and two 960 GB NVMe drives is $147 per month. Each of those carries a one-time setup fee equal to one month of rental, so the first invoice is double the recurring price. That is worth planning for.

No renewal markup

There is no teaser price that doubles in year two. What the order catalog quotes as the monthly rate is what the service renews at, which is the single biggest practical difference between OVHcloud and the shared hosts a US buyer usually compares it against.

Bandwidth, DDoS and add-ons

VPS and bare metal come with unlimited traffic rather than a terabyte allowance, capped instead by port speed: 500 Mbps on the smallest VPS, rising to 1, 2 and 3 Gbps on larger models, and up to 3 Gbps public with 25 Gbps private on Advance bare metal. There is a caveat the footnote spells out: instances ordered in Mumbai, Singapore and Sydney do have a monthly quota (1 TB on VPS-1 and VPS-2, 3 TB on VPS-3 and VPS-4, 4 TB on VPS-5 and VPS-6) and are throttled to 10 Mbps beyond it. On Public Cloud, incoming and outgoing traffic are both listed as included, so there is no per-gigabyte egress bill on compute instances.

Anti-DDoS mitigation is built into the network and applies to every product at no extra charge. OVHcloud describes its VAC infrastructure as having proven capacity to absorb attacks up to 1.3 Tbps, which is a meaningful figure for anyone who has been extorted off a cheaper host.

Backups and panels are separate line items. Automated Backup with 20 GB of space is $1.90 per month, a 20 GB snapshot option is $1.20 per month, and the current VPS range also includes a daily automatic backup of the last 24 hours. If you want a managed-style control panel, cPanel licences start at $22 per month for a single account and Plesk Web Host is $45 per month; these are licences bolted onto an unmanaged server, not a managed service.

Support and verdict

Support is by email and ticket through the control panel, and OVHcloud points customers who lack the technical skills to run a server toward its partner network. Nobody is going to fix your WordPress install for you. The published service level agreement on VPS is 99.9 percent availability.

OVHcloud is a strong pick if you want unmetered bandwidth, included DDoS mitigation and a choice of US, Canadian and European regions from a provider that owns its own infrastructure. It is a poor pick if you want hand-holding, a money-back guarantee or a one-click managed WordPress stack.
