WP Engine at a glance

WP Engine is a managed WordPress host founded in Austin, Texas in 2010. It runs WordPress sites on cloud capacity rented from Google Cloud, AWS and Microsoft Azure, wrapped in its own caching layer, its own User Portal and a support desk that is on chat around the clock. There is no cPanel, no root access, no mailboxes and no domain registration; you pick a plan by how many sites you run and how many monthly visits they get.

Plans and what a tier really buys

There are three families. Essential is the self-service tier and still uses the Startup, Professional, Growth and Scale names inside the plan builder; Core adds isolated resources and a 99.99% uptime SLA; Enterprise is quote-only. Startup covers 1 site, 25,000 visits a month, 10 GB of storage and 75 GB of bandwidth. Professional covers 3 sites, 75,000 visits, 15 GB and 150 GB. Growth covers 10 sites, 100,000 visits, 20 GB and 240 GB. Scale covers 30 sites, 400,000 visits, 50 GB and 550 GB. Core starts at 30 to 50 sites and 400,000 to 800,000 visits. Extra sites cost $20 a month each.

Month to month, the four Essential tiers are $35, $65, $130 and $330. Paying for a year applies a 20% coupon that brings the first year to $336, $624, $1,248 and $3,168, or $28, $52, $104 and $264 a month. That coupon is the catch: WP Engine’s own footnote says first-year pricing is for new customers on Essential plans only and is not valid for renewals, so year two lands at the full rate. Core is published at $400 a month billed annually.

Overages: the number that decides the bill

Visits are metered and going over is not free. The overage page states that customers on Startup, Professional, Growth, Scale and the Agency plans pay $2 for every 1,000 visitors above the plan limit, with a worked example of 10,000 extra visits costing $20. WP Engine says it never throttles a site for a traffic spike, and bills overages monthly even on a prepaid annual subscription. Bandwidth behaves differently: the support article says neither shared nor Premium plans are charged bandwidth overages, and going over triggers a conversation rather than an invoice. Storage is the third meter: Essential plans buy extra space at $1 per GB in 5, 10, 25 and 50 GB steps or $0.40 per GB in 250 GB blocks, while Core and Enterprise buy 250 GB blocks at $100 a month. One IP address within 24 hours counts as a single visit, and bot traffic does not count.

What managed actually includes

Every plan, including the cheapest, gets one-click staging and development environments, daily automatic backup checkpoints plus on-demand ones, auto-renewing SSL, SSH access, security patching and plugin risk scans, automated WordPress and PHP updates, the EverCache caching layer, a Cloudflare-powered global CDN, ten premium themes, Genesis Blocks and transferable sites. Backups sit in the portal for 30 days, with published retention of 30 to 60 days. Migration is free through the automated plugin; managed migration services are a Core feature.

Several things people assume are bundled are add-ons on Essential. Smart Plugin Manager, which updates plugins with visual regression testing and rollbacks, is $120 a year per licence; Site Monitoring is $60; NitroPack front-end optimisation is $240. All three come with one licence bundled on Core and Enterprise. The eCommerce Performance Pack is $1,188 a year per site. Most importantly, Global Edge Security, the managed Cloudflare WAF plus advanced DDoS mitigation, is a $420-a-year add-on on every tier including Enterprise. The CDN in the base plan is not the WAF.

Protection, locations and support

WP Engine advertises Layer 3 and 4 DDoS protection on all plans and describes Global Edge Security as adding a managed web application firewall and advanced mitigation through Cloudflare. No filtering capacity is published, so these stay claims rather than measured numbers.

Site placement is broad because it borrows three clouds. Thirteen Google Cloud regions are open to standard plans: Iowa, South Carolina, Montreal, Belgium, London, Frankfurt, the Netherlands, Finland, Taiwan, Tokyo, Sydney, Singapore and Tel Aviv, some flagged as upgrade-only. Nine AWS regions and six Azure regions, including Dubai and Pune, are reserved for Premium plans, and the Headless Platform runs in four Google regions. Moving region later means a scheduled migration through support.

Support runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year from Austin, San Antonio and Limerick, through live chat, phone and tickets. The scope article is explicit that phone support is not available on Lite and Startup plans and that only Premium Plus customers can open their own tickets; everyone else has them raised on their behalf. No response-time target is published.

Refunds and who should look elsewhere

There is no money-back guarantee in the current terms of service, plans page or FAQ. Cancellation needs 30 days’ notice, fees are non-refundable except where the terms say otherwise, and a prorated refund only appears if WP Engine terminates for convenience. It suits agencies and businesses with predictable traffic that value staging, backups and a real support desk over a low sticker price. It is the wrong shop for hobby sites, for anyone needing email hosting or root access, and for anyone whose traffic is spiky enough that the $2 per 1,000 overage becomes the largest line on the invoice.
