We compared 16 providers and 15 plans for web hosting with a free domain on six criteria, from the real monthly cost (including the renewal price) to support and refund terms. Key factors here: whether the free domain lasts only the first year and what it costs to renew.
Many hosts include a domain registration when you buy a hosting plan, usually on an annual or longer billing term. It is a genuine convenience: you register the name and set up hosting in one checkout, DNS is configured automatically, and your site can go live the same day. But "free" almost always means free for the first year only, so it is worth understanding the terms before choosing a plan because of it.
This is the most important question. Make sure the domain is registered in your name, with your email as the registrant contact, and that you can unlock it and get the authorization code whenever you want. Reputable hosts do this by default, but read the terms. A domain is your brand's address and should never be held hostage by a hosting plan.
One account, one bill, automatic DNS configuration and a single support team to contact. For a first website, this simplicity is worth a lot.
If you ever switch hosts, your domain stays put and you only update DNS records. Some registrars also charge lower renewal prices and include privacy protection. Many site owners take the free first year, then transfer the domain to a registrar once it is allowed.
A free domain saves the price of one year's registration. That can be meaningful on a cheap plan, but it should not outweigh differences in hosting quality, support or renewal pricing. Compare the monthly price and the renewal price of the hosting itself, add the domain renewal for year two, and see which option comes out ahead over two or three years.

Web hosting with a free domain starts at $1/mo. Our catalog lists 78 plans here, from budget to high-end. The final price depends on CPU cores, RAM and storage type, and on whether an intro price renews higher.
