How the free domain offer works
Many hosts include a domain registration when you buy a hosting plan, usually on an annual or longer billing term. It is a genuine convenience: you register the name and set up hosting in one checkout, DNS is configured automatically, and your site can go live the same day. But "free" almost always means free for the first year only, so it is worth understanding the terms before choosing a plan because of it.
Conditions to check
Billing term. The free domain is often available only on 12-month or longer plans, not month-to-month.
Eligible extensions. Common ones like .com, .net or .org are typically included; premium names and some country extensions are not.
Renewal price. From year two, you pay the provider's regular domain renewal rate, which can be higher than at a standalone registrar.
Privacy protection. WHOIS privacy may be free, or it may be a paid add-on.
Cancellation terms. If you request a refund within the money-back period, many hosts deduct a domain fee or keep the domain.
Who owns the domain?
This is the most important question. Make sure the domain is registered in your name, with your email as the registrant contact, and that you can unlock it and get the authorization code whenever you want. Reputable hosts do this by default, but read the terms. A domain is your brand's address and should never be held hostage by a hosting plan.

Advantages of a separate registrar
If you ever switch hosts, your domain stays put and you only update DNS records. Some registrars also charge lower renewal prices and include privacy protection. Many site owners take the free first year, then transfer the domain to a registrar once it is allowed.
Calculating the true value
A free domain saves the price of one year's registration. That can be meaningful on a cheap plan, but it should not outweigh differences in hosting quality, support or renewal pricing. Compare the monthly price and the renewal price of the hosting itself, add the domain renewal for year two, and see which option comes out ahead over two or three years.
Practical tips
Choose a short, memorable name and check trademark conflicts before registering.
Turn on auto-renew and keep a valid payment method so the domain never expires by accident.
Set up email on the domain and free SSL right after launch.
