This tool measures latency from your browser to the 39 providers listed in our directory and sorts them from fastest to slowest. The key point is that the measurement runs client-side, on the visitor's own device, so the result reflects your network and your location rather than an abstract test from a single point. Our server is not involved in the measurements. You get a personal ranking: which provider will feel most responsive for you, before you buy anything. Keep in mind that one provider can operate data centers across North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific; the test hits its public web endpoint, so check the specific region you plan to deploy in on the provider's review page.
Why latency matters
How much latency matters depends on the workload:
- Game servers: every millisecond counts, and low ping is critical for responsiveness.
- Websites and apps: latency adds to load time, so a nearby location makes pages open faster.
- Bots and APIs: with frequent requests, latency accumulates and slows the whole system down.
- Trading VPS: order routing is sensitive to latency, which is why traders pick servers near exchange hubs such as New York or London.
- Databases: if the app and the database are in different places, high latency slows every query.
How to choose a data center location
The main rule is to host close to your audience, not close to you. If your users are mostly in one region, pick a location near them, even if it does not top your personal test. For US audiences a central location such as Dallas or Chicago keeps latency reasonable coast to coast, while East Coast (New York, Ashburn) or West Coast (Los Angeles, Silicon Valley) data centers suit regionally concentrated traffic. General guidelines: under 30 ms is excellent, 30–80 ms is comfortable for most projects, and above 150 ms latency starts to hurt interactive workloads.
