RackNerd at a glance

RackNerd LLC is a US infrastructure provider that sells shared hosting, reseller hosting, KVM and AMD Ryzen VPS, Windows VPS, bare metal and hybrid dedicated servers, high-bandwidth unmetered servers and colocation. Its corporate office is in Rancho Cucamonga, California, and it lists 20 data centers across North America, Europe and Asia. The company is best known in low-end hosting circles for one thing: annual VPS specials that undercut almost everyone else, with a 1 GB KVM machine advertised at $21.99 for a whole year.

Pricing: read the term, not the badge

The specials page is the part of the site that matters most, and it is priced per year rather than per month. At the time of this check the ladder ran $21.99/year for 1 GB, $35.99/year for 2 GB, $59.99/year for 4 GB, $89.99/year for 6 GB and $119.99/year for 8 GB. Divided out, that is roughly $1.83 to $10.00 per month, but you pay the full year up front. There is no monthly option on a special.

The obvious question for a US buyer is what happens at renewal. RackNerd does not print a “renews at” line on the specials page. What the order form does show is the plan sitting on a recurring annual billing cycle at the same price it was sold at, plus a biennial option at exactly twice the annual figure, and no separate renewal column. On that evidence the specials look like ordinary recurring products rather than first-term teasers, but the site never states a renewal policy in words, so treat it as unstated rather than guaranteed and check your invoice before the first renewal date.

The standard, non-special price lists are a different world. A regular 1 GB KVM VPS is $17.99/month and a 4 GB machine $24.59/month; the Ryzen NVMe line starts at the same $17.99 and the Windows VPS line at $27.59. Shared hosting is $5.59, $9.59 and $15.59 per month for 30, 100 and 200 GB of SSD space, month to month with no contract. Dedicated servers start at $139/month for an older Xeon E3-1230 v2 and climb to $479/month for a 160 TB storage build.

What you actually get

  • KVM virtualization with SolusVM, full root access, one included IPv4 address and 1 Gbps ports.
  • RAID-10 SSD storage on the KVM line, pure NVMe on the Ryzen and Windows lines.
  • Shared hosting on CloudLinux with LiteSpeed, cPanel, Softaculous, free SSL and daily JetBackup backups.
  • Free migration from a previous host on shared plans, handled by opening a ticket after the order.
  • Up to 100 free IPv6 addresses on request, but only in specific locations (Los Angeles and France for the KVM line).

Support and guarantees

Support is ticket-based and advertised as available 24×7. The published phone number is a corporate hotline, and the contact page explicitly says to open a ticket for sales, support, billing or abuse instead of calling. There is no live chat advertised and no published response-time target. This is a self-serve, unmanaged provider: you get the server and the panel, and you administer it yourself.

The refund policy deserves a plain reading. RackNerd’s terms state that no refunds are provided by default once payment is received, and that refunds are handled case by case. There is no 30-day money-back guarantee of the kind US shared hosts usually advertise. Because the specials are annual, that means a year of prepayment with no contractual way out, which is the real cost of the low headline price.

The service level agreement promises 99.999% uninterrupted transit and electricity measured monthly, with account credits of 2% of monthly fees per extra hour of downtime, capped at 50% of the monthly fee, and credits must be requested within 30 days. Those are the provider’s own published figures, not an independent measurement, and the terms elsewhere state that services are provided “as is” with no guarantee of availability.

Who it suits

RackNerd fits hobby projects, side deployments, monitoring nodes, small VPN-free test boxes, mirrors and anything where losing a year’s prepayment would be an annoyance rather than a problem. The hardware on the cheap tiers is older Xeon silicon and the support is ticket-only, so production workloads with uptime obligations belong on a managed host or on the dedicated line. Budget buyers who want a month-to-month exit or a money-back window should look elsewhere.
