Hostwinds at a glance

Hostwinds is a US host founded in 2010 and run from offices just south of Seattle, Washington. It owns the hardware it rents out and sells shared and business hosting on cPanel, reseller plans, Linux and Windows VPS in managed and unmanaged flavours, hourly cloud servers, dedicated machines and colocation. Its own terms now describe it as a HostPapa Inc company, so the brand sits inside a larger group while keeping its product line and control panel.

Who Hostwinds is for

It fits less well if you need a data center outside Texas, Washington or the Netherlands, want NVMe storage, or expect a long refund window.

Unmanaged versus managed VPS

This split is the most useful thing to understand about Hostwinds. Both lines use the same hardware tiers and Cloud Portal; the difference is who fixes the server. Unmanaged Linux starts at $4.99/mo for 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, 30 GB SSD and 1 TB of transfer, then $9.99/mo for 2 GB, $18.99/mo for 2 vCPU and 4 GB, and $38.99/mo for 4 vCPU and 8 GB, up to 16 vCPU and 96 GB at $328.99/mo. Those prices carry no promotional discount, so month two costs the same as month one.

Managed Linux is the same tier list at a higher list price, currently shown with 35 percent off the first billing cycle. Tier 1 is $7.14/mo then $10.99/mo, the 2 GB tier $14.29 then $21.99, the 4 GB tier $25.99 then $39.99, and the 8 GB tier $51.99 then $79.99. In steady state that is close to double the unmanaged price, which is what the site means by saving up to 50 percent on a self-managed server. Management covers OS updates, package installs, virus scans, boot and hardware problems and troubleshooting through chat or tickets.

Windows is sold the same way but costs more because of licensing: unmanaged tier 1 is $16.99/mo and the 4 GB tier is $30.99/mo, while managed tier 1 shows $14.94/mo on the first cycle and $22.99/mo after. The promotional managed price is briefly below the unmanaged one, so check the invoice, not the landing page. The unmanaged tiers are also sold by the hour on the Cloud Servers page from $0.006931/hr. Backups are an add-on at $1/mo plus $0.03 per GB, and bandwidth over the allowance costs $0.01 per GB.

Web hosting and dedicated servers

Shared hosting is billed annually at $6.99, $8.99 and $10.99/mo for one, four and unlimited domains, with 35 percent off the first year. Business plans add LiteSpeed, fewer accounts per server and a Cloudflare CDN for $11.99 to $16.99/mo. All include cPanel, Softaculous, free AutoSSL, unlimited mailboxes and databases, a free dedicated IP and free migration; standalone SSL certificates cost from $75 a year.

Dedicated servers are configured to order, and the entry models are old but genuinely cheap. A four-core Xeon E3-1270 v2 with 8 GB RAM, one 1 TB drive, 8 usable IPs and 40 TB of transfer is $39/mo, an E3-1271 v3 is $45/mo, an E3-1270 v6 with 32 GB is $65/mo in Seattle, and a dual E5-2620 v2 with 12 cores and 64 GB is $89/mo. RAM, drives, RAID level and bandwidth are priced individually, and every dedicated server is fully managed.

Data centers and platform features

Hostwinds runs three facilities: Seattle, Dallas and Amsterdam, described as SAS Type II audited Tier 3+ sites with 2N power and multiple Tier 1 carriers. A short list next to the big clouds, but it covers the west coast, the central USA and Europe. Dedicated servers are offered only in Dallas and Seattle.

Every virtual server sits behind a firewall that runs outside the guest operating system, so a mistake inside the VM cannot switch it off. The Cloud Portal handles snapshots, volumes, load balancers, DNS, IPv4 and IPv6, object storage, VNC, serial console and an API. Custom ISO uploads work, and one-click templates cover WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, LAMP and LEMP, cPanel/WHM with a separate licence, Virtualmin and Minecraft, which has its own landing page on the unmanaged ladder at the same $9.99/mo for 2 GB.

Support, uptime and refunds

Support is 24/7/365 through live chat and tickets, with a published phone number. Hostwinds advertises a 99.9999% network and power uptime guarantee across its product pages, an unusually bold figure; the published terms spell out no matching service credits, so treat it as a marketing promise, not a contractual SLA. The refund policy is the real catch: payments are refundable, prorated, only if you cancel and request the refund within 72 hours of the charge, and hourly services, domains, SSLs, IP addresses and crypto-funded orders are excluded. Cards, PayPal and Alipay are the stored payment methods.

Verdict

Hostwinds is a plainly priced US host with an unusually clear choice between doing the work yourself and paying someone else to do it. The unmanaged line is the bargain, the managed line is fair for what it includes, and the dedicated configurator is cheap if you can live with older Xeons. The compromises are three data centers, SATA SSD instead of NVMe, and a 72-hour refund window.
