HostGator at a glance

HostGator launched in 2002 and became one of the best-known budget hosts in the US. Today it is a Newfold Digital brand, the same group that owns Bluehost, and much of its catalog now runs on shared Newfold platforms. It sells shared web hosting, WordPress hosting, self-managed VPS and dedicated servers, along with domains, a website builder and a growing set of AI and agent hosting tools. The brand still leans on the friendly gator mascot, simple plans and round-the-clock support.

Who HostGator is for

  • Beginners and small businesses that want an inexpensive shared plan with a free domain and SSL.
  • Site owners running several small WordPress sites under one account.
  • Developers who want a low-cost self-managed VPS with modern AMD EPYC hardware.
  • Businesses that need a dedicated server with cPanel/WHM, or Windows with Plesk.

Pricing and renewals

HostGator loads its shared hosting prices dynamically, and they change with frequent promotions. The archived copies of its official pricing page that we used do not include those prices, so we do not list shared plan prices for HostGator; confirm the checkout total and the renewal rate on HostGator’s site before you buy. The discount applies to the first invoice only, and renewals are billed at the regular rate for the term you choose, with shorter renewal terms costing more per month.

The VPS line is clearer because the prices are published on the plan cards. On a 24-month term, Snappy 1000 (NVMe 2: 1 vCPU, 2 GB DDR5, 50 GB NVMe) is $2.09/mo and renews at $4.68/mo, Snappy 2000 (NVMe 4: 2 vCPU, 4 GB, 100 GB) is $4.18/mo renewing at $9.35/mo, Snappy 4000 (NVMe 8) is $8.36/mo renewing at $18.70/mo, and Snappy 8000 (NVMe 16: 8 vCPU, 16 GB, 450 GB) is $17.67/mo renewing at $39.53/mo. These are the same server configurations and prices Bluehost sells, which makes sense given the shared ownership.

Dedicated servers

Dedicated plans come in three sizes: Value (8 cores, 32 GB DDR5, 1 TB NVMe), Power (16 cores, 64 GB, 2 TB) and Enterprise (32 cores, 128 GB, 3 TB), all on AMD EPYC processors with unmetered bandwidth and three dedicated IPs. HostGator loads these prices at checkout; the identical Bluehost configurations currently start around $144/mo on a three-year term, which is a useful reference point.

Features

Shared plans now bundle a free Cloudflare CDN with Argo routing, free Let’s Encrypt SSL, malware scanning, managed WordPress updates, a site migration tool and a free domain for the first year on 12-month or longer terms. The plan cards also list a web application firewall and DDoS protection, with AI-powered malware removal, staging, SSH and WP-CLI on the feature lists. Storage runs from 10 GB SSD on Hatchling to 100 GB on Pro, with bandwidth unmetered under a fair-use policy. VPS plans include root SSH and API access, DDoS protection, a dedicated IP and optional one-click stacks such as n8n and Docker. Dedicated servers can run Linux with cPanel/WHM or Windows with Plesk.

Data centers

HostGator does not publish a public list of data center locations for its current plans. Its dedicated page describes a Tier 3 facility, and hosting is US-based. If data center location matters for your audience, ask sales before ordering.

Support and guarantees

Support is available 24/7. The entry Hatchling tier is chat only, while higher shared plans include phone and chat support. HostGator offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on hosting fees, but it excludes monthly terms, renewals, add-ons and domains, and a non-refundable domain fee applies if you cancel a plan that included a free domain. Uptime commitments differ by product: 99% on shared hosting, 99.9% on dedicated servers and 99.99% advertised for VPS.

Verdict

HostGator is a reasonable budget pick for simple sites and one of the cheapest ways to get an AMD EPYC VPS, thanks to the Newfold platform it shares with Bluehost. Its weak points are opaque dynamic pricing on shared plans, steep renewals, chat-only support on the cheapest tier and little information about where your server lives. Compare renewal prices carefully, and consider the VPS if you are comfortable managing a server yourself.
